Lately, my students are a writing a comprehension letter (once per week). It includes topics that have been covered in reader's workshop. Their current letters include schema (connections), questions, *vocabulary and a visualization.
The students usually have some comprehension questions to complete as well as some silent reading. I think that this is plenty for a 30 minute seatwork time.
White Church earned the National Blue Ribbon Award in 2005 due primarily to the
dedication of the teachers, support staff, adminstration, outside organizations, and
parents. The school has benefited by learning different strategies from many different
programs throughout the past few years. Some of the present and past programs include
K.A.L.L. (Kansas Accelereated Literacy Learning through the University of Kansas), P.B.S.
(Positive Behavioral Supports through the University of Kansas), First Things First (a
district initiative), Math Investigations, Writer's Workshop, Balanced Literacy, Reader's
Workshop, and others. The teachers have taken the time to analyze data, meet the individual
needs of students, implement flexible grouping, implement after-school tutoring, study
professional literature, attend Wednesday in-services, attend weekly grade level planning,
and so much more. Please contact our prinicial, Mrs. Blancarte at deblanc@kckps.org if
have any questions.
